Fang Xinru in the Southern Song Dynasty
The stone carving inscribed by Fang Xinru in the Southern Song Dynasty is
situated on the Cliff side of the Seven- Star Cave (once called the Xixia Cave) in
Guilin, standing 1.67 meters high by 1.67 meters wide, engraved in May, the 7th
year of Jiading Period in the Southern Song Dynasty (1214 C.E.). The inscription on
it is that, “Fang Xinru You (Fang Xinru visited here.), engraved on the 16th day of the
fifth lunar month in 1214 C.E., in the Xixia Cave of Jingjiang Prefecture.” Fang Xinru
has made significant contribution to the inheritance and development of Guilin’
s history, culture and the stone carving culture in Guilin by leaving a large number
of stone carvings behind in Guilin, more than 20 of which have been preserved in
the urban district of the city. Accordingly he has been called “the First Person of the
Stone Carvings in Guilin”.
The Shijie Hall Built by Fang Xinru,
an Exhortation to Later Generations to Keep Moral Integrity
Fang Xinru (1177-1222 C.E.), Furuo, his courtesy name, was born in the present
Xiagao Village, Huating Township, Putian City, Fujian Province. In the 7th year of
the Jiading Period in the Southern Song Dynasty (1214 C.E.), Xinru’s official post
was changed from being in charge of the prosecution and judging in Guangnan
Western District to the official in charge of transportation and censorship of the
same area, as had happened to his father 20 years ago (Fang Songqing had been
in charge of the prosecution and judging in Guangnan Eastern District in the 2nd
year of the Period of Shaoxi in the Southern Song Dynasty (1191 C.E.) before he was
changed to the post of Guangnan Western District in the 3rd year of the Period of
Shaoxi (1192)). During their term of office, both the father and the son were honest
and upright, taking the initiative to visit the poor and the unfortunate, and caring
about the livelihood of the common people. Therefore they were popular with and
beloved by the common people. In order to commemorate and commend his late
father’s contribution in Guilin, Fang Xinru extended and repaired the ancestral
hall, which had been built by the grateful local people in the Cishi Pavilion of the
Yongning Temple in the south of the city (currently in the neighborhood of the
Dagoba in the Wanshou Lane near the Wenchang Bridge), Besides, he invited Ke
Mengde, who was from Putian to compile The Greeting and Parting Divine Poetry
for the Respected Fang’s Ancestral Hall. In spring and autumn every year, the local
people would spontaneously offer sacrifices to Fang Songqing’s portrait. (The above
historical details are recorded in Volume 166 titled “Shijing (Fang Xinru’s Literary
name) in Baomo Temple”, Respected Fang of The Complete Works of Mr.Hou Cun,
The Water Center Collection·The Stone Tablet Guarding the Respected Fang’s Tomb
Passage by Ye Shi in the Song Dynasty respectively. In Volume 166 titled “Shijing (Fang
Xinru’s Literary name) in Baomo Temple”, Respected Fang of The Complete Works of
Mr.Hou Cun, it is recorded that the grateful local people built the ancestral hall in
the Yongning Temple to commemorate Fang Xinru and his late father’s contribution
to Guilin. Besides, a well-known poet from Putian was invited to compile poetry
to record Fang Xinru and his father’s contribution to Guilin.” In the Water Center
Collection·The Stone Tablet Guarding the Respected Fang’s Tomb Passage by Ye Shi
in the Song Dynasty, it is recorded that, “Following his father’s step, Fang Xinru
held the same official post as Tixing and Yunpan in Guangnan Western District. In
spring and autumn every year, the local people would spontaneously offer sacrifices
to Fang Songqing’s portrait.”). Afterwards, Fang Xinru had the building where his
father had worked repaired, which was designated as the “Shijie Hall” (meaning
keep alive the moral integrity from one generation to another) inscribed on a
horizontal inscription board signed with such other words as “Shijie Hall, designated
by Fang Xinru, after Xi Cao Tai had been repaired in February of the 8th year in
the Period of Jiading. Yi Fu, from Changsha, wrote the horizontal inscribed board,
which was engraved on the cliff side of the Hidden Dragon Cave”. In this way, Fang
Xinru commemorated his father’s moral rule, reminding and exhorting himself to
be devoted to his duty while showing his determination to be an honest and upright
official by the “Shijie Hall”.
