The Quanjia Poems at the Deer Bleating Feast by Wang Zhenggong during
the Southern Song Dynasty

The stone carving of the Quanjia Poems at the Deer Bleating Feast by Wang
Zhenggong during the Southern Song Dynasty is located on the upper right side of
the entrance to the Reading Cave of the Unique Beauty Peak, standing 1.15 meters
in height by 0.64 meter wide. After more than 800 years, a layer of solidified calcium
bicarbonate has been formed due to long-term water seepage of the mountain,
covering the surface of the stone carving. It was until 1983 that it was discovered by
the archaeologists in Guilin when they were sorting out other stone carvings on the
cliff of the Unique Beauty Peak. The inscription on it is “The Congratulatory Poems
to extend encouragement and congratulations to the candidates (juren) who were
going to take the exam held by Board of Rites on the Feast held by Quan fu Jin lue Ti
xing Da Zhong Cheng (an official position responsible for planning and controlling
the justice, political and military affairs of the prefecture)”. It is about the poems
with the preface written by Wang Zhenggong in the first year of the Jiatai Period (1201
C.E.), who was the prefect of the Western District of Guangnan in Guilin Prefecture
then.

The Quanjia Poems at the Deer Bleating Feast, from which the Well-Known
Remark that “The Guilin Landscape Is the Best under the Heaven.” Originated

In the first year of the Jiatai Period in the Song Dynasty (1201 C.E.), eleven
candidates who had succeeded in the Xiangshi examination (the provincial
examination for the selection of juren from xiucai under the civil service
examination system) in Guilin were leaving for Linan (the present Hangzhou city
in Zhejiang Province), the imperial capital at that time, to take the examination
given by Board of Rites in the next spring. Wang Zhenggong, born in Siming (the
present Ningbo City in Zhejiang Province), as prefect responsible for justice of the
Western District of Guangnan, held a “Deer Bleating Feast” in the name of the local
government by convention for the eleven excellent young men (juren) before they
left. Wang, sixty nine years old then, wrote two “quanjia poems” as congratulatory
speech to these candidates on the feast. (In the preface of The Quanjia Poems at
the Deer Bleating Feast, it goes that, “In the first year of Jiatai Period, altogether
eleven candidates were successful in the provincial examination held in Guilin.
On September 16, by convention, a celebrating feast was held for them. Wang
Zhenggong, Prefect concurrently responsible for justice, wrote the poems to
extend encouragement and congratulations to them.”) By “quanjia”, it refers to the
congratulatory speech for the candidates who were going to take the exam held by
Board of Rites. The first poem is mainly about the words of praise for the successful
candidates’ talent in the hope that they could achieve good performance in the
examination held by the Board of Rites in the spring of the following year. The
second poem is encouragement for the successful candidates from a fair place like
Guilin producing outstanding people to perform like soldiers of high morale on a
battlefield, realizing their great expectations, and glittering like the South Dipper
high up in the sky. The beginning of the second poem is the earliest written form of
the widely known remark --“the Guilin landscape is the best under the heaven”—
that has been handed down to this day.
